Capsule Geology

The Campbell (Campbell’s Trench) occurrence is located at an elevation of approximately 1300 metres on the east side of a small knoll, northeast of the Klawli River and approximately 5.7 kilometres north-northwest of the northwest end of Chuchi Lake.

Regionally, the area is underlain by undivided volcanic rocks of the Lower Jurassic Chuchi Lake Succession (Takla Group) and quartz monzonitic to monzogranitic intrusive rocks of the Lower Jurassic Hogem Plutonic Suite.

Locally, a zone of mineralization, referred to as Campbell’s Trench, comprises veins, blebs and disseminations of bornite with lesser chalcopyrite, malachite and rare native gold in quartz veins associated with a northwest- and northeast-trending fracture zones cutting monzonites and syenite dikes.

Drilling on the zone intersected 1- to 2-millimetre wide actinolite-potassium feldspar-bornite veinlet stockworks and bornite disseminations with sporadic actinolite-quartz-chalcopyrite ± pyrite veins. Late quartz-bornite-chalcopyrite veins, up to 4 centimetres wide, cut and have possibly remobilized the earlier mineralization and are further cut by later stage quartz-molybdenite veins up to 1-metre wide.

In 1971, a drillhole (no. 17) is reported to have yielded intercepts of 0.59 cent copper and 0.64 gram per tonne gold over 18.28 metres (36.6 to 54.8 metres down hole), including two 3.05-metre sections yielding 1.00 and 1.08 per cent copper with 2.175 and 0.775 grams per tonne gold, respectively (Assessment Report 34717). Silver assays were not reported. The mineralized intercepts are located approximately 30 metres south and 43.5 metres south of the main trench exposure.

In 1987, sampling of a trench (Campbell’s Trench) yielded average grades of 2.2 grams per tonne gold and 3.16 per cent copper over a 3.6-metre interval, whereas previous grab samples yielded up to 17.1 grams per tonne gold (Assessment Report 18123).

In 1997, a grab sample from trench no. 1 is reported to have assayed 14.37 grams per tonne gold, 21.8 grams per tonne silver and 6.98 per cent copper, whereas a 3.6-metre interval from the trench averaged 2.29 grams per tonne gold, 10.2 grams per tonne silver and 4.82 per cent copper (Assessment Report 25152).

In 2007, sampling of trench Tr-2007-7, located immediately east of the past trenches on the Campbells Trench zone, yielded 0.35 per cent copper and 0.25 gram per tonne gold over 6.0 metres, whereas a trench Tr-2007-5 tested the northwest strike extension of the zone and yielded 0.15 per cent copper over 6.0 metres (Assessment Report 30053). Another trench (Tr-2007-2), located on a soil-geochemical anomaly to the south of the Campbells Trench zone, yielded 0.14 per cent copper over 9.0 metres, including 0.46 gram per tonne gold over 2.0 metres and 0.099 per cent molybdenum over 1.5 metres (Assessment Report 30053).

In 2008, a drillhole (2008-01) is reported to have yielded intercepts of 0.43 per cent copper and 0.51 gram per tonne gold over 30 metres (17 to 47 metres down hole), including two 2.0-metre intercepts of 0.59 and 0.21 per cent copper with 1.18 and 1.10 grams per tonne gold, respectively (Assessment Report 34717). Silver assays were not reported.

In 2013, a rock sample (051), taken approximately 250 metres north of the main trenched zone, yielded 1.53 per cent copper, 1.4 grams per tonne silver and 0.075 gram per tonne gold (Assessment Report 34717).

In 2014, a drillhole (DD14COL001) on the Campbells Trench zone yielded 0.30 per cent copper over the final 12 metres (452 to 464 metres down hole) of the hole (Assessment Report 35327). Mineralization comprised chalcopyrite blebs with lesser pyrite and trace molybdenite in quartz ± chlorite ± carbonate vein, up to 3 millimetres wide, and locally disseminated chalcopyrite in potassic feldspar-chlorite-hematite–altered hornblende monzonite.
